The hymen can be reconstructed if it has been torn due to sexual activity (intercourse), vigorous exercise, or tampon insertion. The typical reason for the hymen repair is for personal reasons or religious or cultural conformity. The surgery requires precise suturing to give a successful result.
The hymen is a thin membrane that surrounds the vaginal opening. Because it is thin tissue, it has to be carefully reconstructed or it will fall apart.
General anesthesia is needed to make the patient relaxed enough to give an accurate reconstruction, and the procedure takes less than an hour. There is very little postoperative pain, and you should avoid any strenuous activities for two to three weeks following your surgery. Abstain from sexual intercourse for six weeks following the procedure.
