Female Genital Surgery
Physicians have neglected aesthetic surgery of the female external
genitalia. However, awareness of female genital aesthetics has increased
owing to increased media attention, both from magazines and video. Women
may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia majora (outer
lips) or, more commonly, labia minora (inner lips). The aging female may
dislike the descent of her pubic hair and labia. A large pubic fat deposit
may be unsightly. Because very few physicians are concerned with the
appearance of the female external genitalia, many women seeking help are
frustrated.

Congenital abnormalities of the penis and scrotum are not
uncommon and require reconstructive surgery. Because these deformities can
be very challenging, a team approach is often used. I frequently operate
on these patients with Dr. Richard Ehrlich, a world-renowned pediatric
urologist. I believe that the combined input and expertise of a pediatric
urologist and a plastic surgeon/urologist (myself) provides the best

States), who is certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery
and the American Board of Urology. He specializes in genital
reconstruction and facial and body surgery for transgender patients. He

Penis Enhancement
Penile enhancement procedures have been performed for
some years, but only by a few physicians owing to professional prejudice
and lack of public knowledge about such operations. Recently, new
developments in penile enlargement surgery have generated interest.
Associated with advances in penile length and girth surgery are other
procedures to improve the appearance of the penis and scrotum, such as
suprapubic lipectomy and liposuction, and elimination of penoscrotal
junction webbing.
Mainstream medical literature rarely describes results from penile
lengthening and girth enlargement. Moreover, misinformation has been
disseminated that makes it difficult for patients and physicians to obtain
accurate data or to evaluate outcome. Standardized techniques or
measurements are not available, and results are frequently exaggerated.
These procedures are evolving, and significant questions remain concerning
their methodology and effectiveness.
